Maps
The Royal Mail ArchiveĀ holds over 700 maps. The earliest map known in the collection dates from 1757, whilst the latest map was produced in 1991.
These maps are mostly General Circulation Maps of the Post Office; and Surveyors' maps, which show the districts that England was divided into and the name of the surveyor.
For England and Wales the collection includes a map showing Circulation of Letters by London Mail Coaches - this shows Cross Roads Mail Coaches, Daily Horse Posts, and a scale of the postage. For Ireland and part of Scotland there are maps showing the Turnpike roads, rivers, canals, towns and distances between them.
The collection also contains a few town maps. Among these is a map of London showing the boundaries of the General and Two Penny Post Deliveries, the divisions or districts of the Two Penny Post and the number and situation of the General and Two Penny Post receiving houses.
